Post-Op Instructions for Common Dental Procedures

To help reduce your stress and worry, Perspective Dental Centre offers post-op tips for a variety of common treatments. Proper healing is crucial for avoiding complications. For starters, we recommend that you wait at least 2 hours before eating anything following dental work where anesthesia was required. Our clinics are very forthcoming with the dos and don’ts. Give us a call if you require clarification on any of the following guidelines:

Root Canals

  • Avoid chewing food on the side of your mouth where the root canal occurred
  • Take the prescribed antibiotics as directed
  • Notify the clinic if the pain persists or intensifies after 3 days
  • Let us know immediately if the restoration filling has fallen out

Crowns and Bridges (Temporary Restoration)

  • Brush the tooth very gently
  • Do not pull up on the dental floss near the temporary restoration
  • Avoid sticky, chewy foods

Crowns and Bridges (Permanent)

  • Use a warm salt water rinse to help with healing (1 tsp salt/8 oz water)
  • Call the clinic if your bite feels abnormal (the tooth should feel normal after 1 week)

Bonding/Fillings

  • Avoid consuming hot and cold items for 72 hours

Scaling/Root Planing

  • Use a salt water rinse (1 tsp salt/8 oz water) 3 times a day to promote healing
  • Brush affected teeth gently
  • Use a cold compress to reduce swelling
  • Avoid hard or chewy foods for 2-3 days

Veneers (Temporary Restoration)

  • Be careful when cleaning and eating near the teeth in question
  • Avoid sticky, chewy foods
  • A salt water rinse (1 tsp salt/8 oz water), Advil or Tylenol can help decrease any pain
  • You should be used to the feel of your new tooth after 7 days

Extractions

  • Bleeding is normal, change your gauze as required
  • Once at home, prop your head up if you feel the need to lie down
  • Notify the dentist if the bleeding doesn’t stop after a day
  • Use pain medication or dentist prescribed cleaning solution as instructed
  • Only eat foods you don’t have to chew for the first few days (pudding, yogurt, thin soups)
  • Do not use any straws when drinking
  • Avoid smoking

If you have any questions regarding your treatment, don’t hesitate to give us a call. We offer a variety of restoration services for your teeth.
